The Eastern Development Centre serves the six counties of Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Norfolk and Suffolk, and four unitary authorities; Luton, Peterborough, Southend and Thurrock, a population of 5.4 million. We aim to work in partnership with local health and social care communities throughout Eastern region.

CSIP works with and is funded by the Department of Health.

We are working more closely with key regional delivery partners, including our regional Department of Health colleagues in public health, to achieve our aim of improving services and outcomes for children and families, adults and older people, including those with mental health problems, physical or learning disabilities and people in the criminal justice system.

The Department of Health is currently reviewing how it
operates in the regions, to ensure it is best placed to support its partners in meeting the future challenging facing health and social care. To find out more about this review and its potential impact on CSIP's work, please read the latest briefing and accompanying covering letter.

New Handbook to Help the Media Improve Public Understanding of Mental Illness

A new guide for journalists on how sensitive reporting can help tackle the stigma of mental illness has been published.

The handbook, What’s the Story?: Reporting Mental Health and Suicide, gives practical guidance to the media on covering suicide, mental illness and violent crime by psychiatric patients.

The handbook has been produced by Shift, the Department of Health-funded CSIP campaign to tackle stigma and discrimination associated with mental illness.

The handbook challenges the common misconception that people with mental health problems are likely to be violent, shows how ‘sensitive’ reporting can prevent copycat suicides and gives advice on avoiding causing needless offence to people affected by mental health problems.

Channel 4 News presenter Jon Snow writes in the foreword: “It’s not often, as a journalist, that you can file a story - and save a life - all in a day’s work. But following the tips in this handbook could help you do just that - or at least make a real difference to the lives of millions of people and their families who live in the shadow of mental illness.”

Ten thousand copies of the handbook have been sent to print, broadcast and online journalists across England. A credit card-sized summary of the guide has also been produced. The guidance and downloadable copies can be found online at: www.shift.org.uk/mediahandbook. Copies can also be ordered by calling 0845 223 5447.

CSIP Eastern to give the East

a £3.9 million Health Kick

More than 130,000 people across the East of England are set to feel the health benefits of a £3.9million investment to improve well-being and encourage healthier lifestyles in schools, homes, workplaces and communities throughout the region.

The grant of £3,900,019 comes from the Big Lottery Fund’s Well-being programme, which focuses on improving mental health, healthy eating and physical activity across England.

Well-being in the East: Delivering a Healthy Active Future is a portfolio of 25 projects that will improve mental health by focusing on prevention, encourage healthier eating by helping people to make better choices and change their lifestyles and increase levels of physical activity among people of all ages.

The portfolio will be led by CSIP Eastern, working with a steering group of the key regional partners and stakeholders in the area of public health, including the regional public health team, regional physical activity forum (Sport England East) and COVER (Community and Voluntary Forum for the East of England).

Susannah Rix, Programme Director at CSIP Eastern, said: “As you can imagine, the partners involved in developing this regional portfolio are very excited by this news today.

“As the key agencies responsible for the main strategies for healthy eating, physical activity and mental well-being in the East of England, it is our belief that the key to improving well-being is rooted in the everyday and the ordinary.

“We believe that to make a real difference to the well-being of everyone in the region we need to engage with people from all walks of life. This includes school children, families, commuters, people in their workplaces, television and the media, older people and others at risk of isolation where they live.

“This exciting opportunity also means that we can further develop and share our knowledge about what really works for everyone.”

During the next 12 months, our plan in CSIP is to continue delivering improvement support on health and social care, and play a central role in the changes that will happen.
